An N95 mask or N95 respirator is a particulate-filtering
facepiece respirator that meets the U.S. National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health (NIOSH) N95 classification of air filtration, meaning that
it filters at least 95% of airborne particles. This standard does not require
that the respirator be resistant to oil; another standard, P95, adds that
requirement. The N95 type is the most common particulate-filtering facepiece
respirator. It is an example of a mechanical filter respirator, which provides
protection against particulates but not against gases or vapors.
N95 respirators are considered functionally equivalent to certain respirators regulated under non-U.S. jurisdictions, such as FFP2 respirators of the European Union and KN95 respirators of China. However, slightly different criteria are used to certify their performance, such as the filter efficiency, test agent and flow rate, and permissible pressure drop.
The N95 mask requires a fine mesh of synthetic polymer fibers, also known as nonwoven polypropylene fabric, which is produced through a process called melt blowing that forms the inner filtration layer that filters out hazardous particles.

Respirator standards around the world loosely fall into the two camps of US-
and EU- like grades. According to 3M, respirators made according to the following
standards are equivalent to US N95 or European FFP2 respirators "for
filtering non-oil-based particles such as those resulting from wildfires,
PM 2.5 air pollution, volcanic eruptions, or bioaerosols (e.g. viruses)".

N95是美国呼吸器的认证等级，由美国国家职业安全健康研究所（NIOSH）认证。这类口罩在指定气流量（85L/min）条件下，能够过滤掉超过95%的非油性颗粒物（气溶胶），所以得名N95。而如果能够过滤超过99%的颗粒物（气溶胶），就称为N99口罩。另外，与N95对应，KN95是经我国GB2626-2006呼吸防护用品自吸过滤式防颗粒物呼吸器标准认证的口罩。
KN95和N95口罩防护级别相当，只不过是遵循不同国家的测试标准。KN95口罩遵循的是中国标准，N95口罩遵循的是美国标准，二者对于非油性颗粒物（实验用氯化钠颗粒物）的防护效率皆不小于95%。
KN95口罩能不能用于一线防护？
KN95口罩和N95口罩都包含医用和非医用的类型。其中，KN95/N95口罩中有“医用”标志的口罩可以用于医护人员抗疫期间的一线防护，没有“医用”标志的口罩不建议医护人员使用，普通人可以用。符合GB19083的1级以上口罩，既能达到95%的过滤性，也能防液体的渗透，可以用于医疗机构各类操作。
KN95/N95口罩为何能够防病毒？
病毒通常不会单独存在于空气中，而是附着在飞沫、尘埃、皮屑等颗粒物上， KN95和N95口罩的过滤机制正是通过口罩中高性能的过滤层将这些细微颗粒物挡住，构建起一道防护屏障。
所以，佩戴KN95/N95即呼吸防护用品自吸过滤式防颗粒物呼吸器口罩时，要注意密合性，应紧贴面部，决不给病毒、细菌留一道“方便之门”，建议慎用带有“呼气阀”式的口罩。
KN95/N95口罩中的医用和非医用口罩有何区别？
医用类型口罩外表面经过疏水处理，GB19083-2010和YY0469-2011的医用外科口罩清楚提出了“合成血液穿透”的要求，“表面抗湿性”的参数指标，明确了医用防护口罩对血液体液等液体的防护效果。通俗讲就像水滴落在荷叶上会滚落一样，液体在口罩表面无法浸透，这就能将医护人员经常碰触到酒精、血液等挡住，不让它快速渗透；而非医用类型的KN95/N95口罩则不会经过这一特殊处理。
KN95和N95防护口罩最起防护功能的是过滤层，该过滤层采用聚丙烯熔喷超细纤维驻极材料，口罩外表面未经过疏水处理，应用时接触到水、酒精等会破坏掉该材料的结构，使过滤作用大打折扣。更何况，血液中常含细菌、病毒等，医院的应用场景又决定了医护人员大概率暴露在病人的血液环境中。因此，医用口罩表面的疏水处理必不可少。而普通人碰到酒精、血液的概率不大，只要定期更换口罩，其外面不经这一处理也无伤大雅。
带呼吸阀的KN95/N95口罩防护效果怎么样？
KN95/N95口罩也分有呼吸阀和无呼吸阀的。对于口罩而言，透气性和过滤效效率果始终是一对矛盾体，如果过滤效果好，往往会觉得比较憋气。呼吸阀正是为了缓解憋气而设计的。
呼气阀和吸气阀是一个机械式开关，吸气时合，呼气时阀开，空气皆经过滤层“筛”一遍，呼气时阀门打开，减轻阻力感。问题就在于，人们不清楚这种机械式开关会不会在佩戴时突然坏掉，亦或是被细小颗粒卡住，让没有经过过滤层的空气携带者有害颗粒物趁虚而入。因此，医用类型的口罩都是没有呼吸阀的。同时，我们也呼吁，在这次抗疫期间，尤其时周边环境比较恶劣时，普通民众也尽量选择无呼吸阀的KN95/N95口罩或医用外科口罩。
